Project aboard
As part of the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP) Global Internal Wave (NGIW) project and the SWOT Adopt a Crossover Campaign - Cape Hatteras (MAB-SWOT), 6 Current and Pressure Sensor Equipped Inverted Echo Sounders (CPIESs) were deployed in January 2023 east of Cape Hatteras where the Gulf Stream leaves the coast within a region covered by the new Surface Water Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite launched in December 2022. During its 90-day fast-repeat phase (March-June 2023), SWOT is conducting twice daily cross-overs in a handful of regions, including this region east of Cape Hatteras The CPIESs, together with other in situ assets, will be used to ground-truth the satellite measurements and to investigate internal tide and mesoscale variability.
