Project aboard
We will continue our research on human perception and movement at sea. As in our previous studies, participants will be members of the ship's crew who volunteer. Each individual will be asked to participate for a maximum of 30 minutes per day, at their own convenience. In our current research, we evaluate human perceptual sensitivity through participants' behavioral choices. As usual, our experimental design must be contingent on weather and sea state. With moderate seas, will ask participants (individually) to estimate how far they would be able to walk along a narrow path laid out on the deck. After making their estimate, each crewmember will attempt to walk along the path. We will compare prior estimates versus posterior performance. The central condition of our research is the fact that ship motion differs in roll versus pitch. Perceptual estimates and actual performance should differ for paths that are aligned with the roll and pitch axes.
