Project aboard

This project uses wide-baseline arrays of moored passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) recorders to record sounds produced by the critically endangered Rice’s whale ( Balaenoptera ricei ) in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico (GoMx). The data from this passive acoustic monitoring program will be used to increase knowledge of Rice’s whales’ spatiotemporal distribution and movement patterns in the GoMx to meet management needs. This project aims to support NMFS’s understanding, analyses, and management of human impacts on Rice’s whales in the GoMx.
