Student cruise
CompletedOperating area: Waianae Coast, Ohau
Route: Honolulu (Hawaii) - United States → Honolulu (Hawaii) - United States
University of Hawaii
Project aboard
Expose 16 undergraduate students to a diversity of at sea scientific operations and data, including wire lowered (CTD, LADCP, Trace Metal Clean CTD), towed (plankton net, nekton net), acoustic (Shipboard ADCP, LADCP), and free-falling instrumentation (Hadal Water Column Profiler). By operating and seeing data from these instruments students will experience physical, chemical, and biological oceanographic disciplines at sea. They will be able to determine the hydrographic properties of the water column, explore current and turbulence variation with depth, see the diversity of plankton and nekton and explore diel vertical migration dynamics, and observe deep-sea scavenger community change with depth. Data from the plankton and micronekton tow will be used in a graduate student's disseration investigating the influence of the island mass effect on marine food webs. Other data collected will be available for students to use in the undergrad theses required in the Global Environmental Sciences program.
